Hello
Anyone bough the kzl fabrication sliding grates?
I’m curious…..
My main concerns are:
1: Rust
2: Access to clean burning pot

Any input is appreciated

Pretty cool concept I suppose. I am personally not a fan of the cooking grids outside the firebox footprint. It will lead to all kinds of unwanted mess for me on the patio. If that's not a concern for you then this would be awesome.
One of the subtle things I like about the Smokefire design is that the top grate stays within the footprint when I slide it forward. Also the barrel design allows for really good access to the entire cooking grid. Not a big fan of other cookers that utilize this sorta thing, but like I said if you have a way to mitigate the mess or you have an area that is not a big deal if it gets messy, I'd go for it. Maybe o large grill mat would be the ticket. Just have to be careful not to step in your mess and track it in the house. The Timberlines front shelf is there largely to catch drippings from the shelves if they are pulled out.

I don't have the slide out grates but KZL did make me a split bottom grate and a full size upper grate that folds in half. great product and workmanship...great guy as well who is very responsive. as long as you properly season them rust is not an issue and they are very non stick so not much risk for meat sticking and tearing when you take it off the grill.

Here is a link to an old post of mine. the pics are when my grates were new and i have put 1 or 2 seasoning coats on them...today they are jet black and beautiful. The brown tint in the pics in the link is not rust but the color or the first batch of oil on them....the attached pic was taken a couple months later and they are even darker now.

I don’t see the point. Looks cool though. I opted for a full size top grate and now do my smoking up there. Gives me a place to put pans underneath.
I have stainless GBS and cast iron for the bottom when I grill.

Same boat as ROCKEWEHARD - I bought the lower (only) split grate for my EX4, and I am a huge fan. He was also wonderful to work with and the craftsmanship was great. I would be concerned with a slider of 1) the mess - good call, jpsBBQ, but also 2) the sliders getting gunked up with smoke/grease/rust...jamming or not sliding at all after a while. If you weren't constantly utilizing that feature it would seem like it would seize. It does look cool, but I will stick with my stationary split grill. I would highly recommend KZL if you're going to get new grates, though. :)

I'm really tempted to buy the top rack for the extra space. The majority of what goes in my EX4 goes on the shelf. Just have to go out outside and visualize the extra square inches. Maybe by the weekend the thermometer outside to get above zero.
