Cooking without pellets

Hello all!
I am a new owner of a SmokeFire grill.
Was wondering if I can grill without pellets! If so how do I go about it?

What would you use instead of pellets?

I suppose in a pinch if all you had was charcoal or wood, you could build a fire in the base of the cooker, but you wouldn’t get a lot of airflow as that comes from the firepot. Seriously though, why???
