I'm ready to buy my EX6 despite the issues that exist. However, I would like to avoid some of the early things that have been addressed by Weber.

Any suggestions how I might go about buying new stock somewhere? My local Lowes and Ace stores are basiclly carrying the inventory they initially received.

Go through Weber and tell them what your looking for.

I have. Waiting a reply. Thought someone may have traveled this road already.

Good Question. There is A LOT of "revisions"
If you want the hopper mod preinstalled then your gonna have to get one from Europe
If you want a REV F auger assembly then your gonna have to take a screw driver to Lowes and Ace and pop the back cover off (it wont take but a few seconds though.)

I am not aware of any way to tell by assembly date, s/n, etc. I will tell you my replacement EX6 was supposed to be (at the time they shipped the replacement) a manufactured model of "what the SmokeFire was designed to be" I can tell you it does have a REF F auger assembly but it still has its issues and I haven't even had a lot of time with everything going on to really test it. So far here are my issues:
-Same software/App as everyone else
-Did not include the hopper mod from production
-Pretty severe left to right temp swing. Even more so than my original.
-Pretty much had a failure to start today (about my 4th real cook) I was able to recover by opening the lid back up when the temp dropped from 190 to 165 and use a bellows to stoke the fire (I had already put some brats on for a LOOONNGG smoke at 210and didn't feel like taking them off and going through the whole shut down and restart proceedure.
-assembly tolerance of the top shelf brackets or the manufacturers tolerance of the top grate itself is too far off to safely use it to hold very much food.

Can I get an AMEN! I haven’t seen any comments on this but I could not agree more!! Who thought that was a good idea.
Are you saying that if you slide it side to side it will fall off the supports? I just checked my EX4 and there is no way it will come off the supports when I move it all of the way to the left or right.

For $1200 it’s flimsy to say the least. On my EX6 you have 3/8” gap on each side and probably a 1/4”of the grate actually on the side supports, the grate clearly could have been 1/2” to 5/8” wider. Put a heavy brisket on and you hope it holds up.

You can order straight from Weber. That’s what I did.

Weber has very good customer service. I bought my EX6, second hand already assembled for 600. I’ve used it three times, with no issues. Not sure I’m a fan of the pellet smoke taste, but it works. I have the cover for it, and the pellet ramp attachment. Not sure the ramp attachment works though, it still looked to me like it was creating a hole in the pellet pile.

I know right?! On my original SmokeFire EX6 in my original review post I really questioned the build quality of these parts before I even fired it up. My original one though seemed to function properly. This new one was dangerously loose though.

My first Smokefire was like you describe yours is. However, my second SmokeFire will not fall out on its own but it only takes a gentle push of my hand and it starts to slip through. I would have to force it down and damage it though for it truly fall out but the force that would be necessary would not be that much. Another way to describe it is if I move it diagonally at opposing corners one of the corners will be slipping off the side brackets.

Edit: I just checked. I stand corrected, I CAN move it only left to right and still gently push it out of the brackets. The issue is the amount of flex of the interior metal of the cook box.

I will post pics or a vid when the weather and my lighting gets better. It is finally raining here.
