Grill
Still looking
Well I asked for information on the YS640S and here is what I got. If I have to purchase “options” just to be able to grill, that is NOT something I would do.
I would pay the $1,999.00 price if the grill came setup to grill just as Weber sells theirs. Sooooo based on everything they sent me, I’m going to either let Weber swap mine out or take my refund and buy another EX6:

What do you have to buy separately to grill that the SF doesn't have?
From what I can see, the equipment and software (especially the software) are better than the SF out of the box.

Grill - Smoke??

I was told this in an email from them:
The unit comes with everything you need to smoke.

Based on that reply, and hate to use the word “assume,” but assuming you can only smoke, not grill, then paying an additional $500.+++
to get the grates, etc is not worth it to me. Additionally, I’ve read their reviews pertaining to their software. Problems just as problems with Weber or Treager etc. I’m going to stay with Weber. Weber called me a few minutes ago. They will pickup my EX6 and replace it with a new Generation 2. That’s fair enough for me.

The options are just that.

FYI:
Smoking and grilling are two separate things.

The unit comes with cooking grates that will allow you to smoke. When you are smoking the diffuser is in place and closed and catches any grease that falls.

If you want to direct grill then you need to open the door of the two piece diffuser so the flame can rise and touch the meat so it is best to have the direct grill grates as they will trap the grease above grill level.

You can grill without them but then all the grease will drain to the bottom of your pit and into your burn grate creating a mess to clean up.

Again, they are strictly an option.
Thanks,

I'm very aware of this. You are the one that mentioned that extra things were needed to grill.

Same as the SF

Some might say a better design than the SF?

I guess you could remove the middle flavourizer bar and burn pot cover to achieve this on the SF but you would still need grill grates.
FYI: You can sear without them but not as good. Over a hotter, direct flame would be a different story.

Grill Grates have holes and grease will still get through.

Just my opinions addressing your concerns about grilling (and searing).

It sounds like you really want the SF and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. That's why are all here.
You just seem to be having a bad run with the SF (going back to the very beginning before) and I thought this unit may give you some peace of mind if you were willing to spend the $$.

Whoa. I DID NOT MEAN TO IMPLY THAT THAT STATEMENT WAS DIRECTED TO YOU IN ANY DEROGATORY WAY. I APOLOGIZE IF IT OFFENDED YOU.

Im in no way offended but you quoted me with an FYI reply so who exactly was it directed at?

Thanks,
The FYI and article was “copied” exactly as it appears on the email I received from their company. Again, that was not directed at you.
