Like what I see as my entry into pellet world from Smokey Mountain.. looking at Searwood at dealer and question why large opening under pellet feed auger?

Why no cover?

Also, is smoke exit through lid?

Hi - the smoke exits through the back lid. After a couple of uses there is pellet dust there. Plus at smoke mode you can see it. I came from a grill with a stack and this holds up great.

The hole on the bottom is for the pellet dump. Works great. Just put a bucket under there and pull the red lever. Plus if it’s like other pellet grills, part of the air intake system is there too to feed into the firebox. Have not actually looked, but I am about sure that’s how it is. Also, the Searwood is much more “normal” as far as the way the auger, hopper etc work. I was glad to see this. Did not care for the rear hopper on the prior model. Seems like it was a real weak point.

The generic cover I ended up getting was under 30 bucks and fits amazing. I just had to turn it backwards because the hopper is on the right. The cover was to fit a pit boss without a stack of similar dimensions. No logos, nice cordura.

Bottom line is they got my cash base on the design and I am very happy with muh purchase - 6 cooks so far.

Have not heard anything about the current auger on the Searwood. It’s super straight forward.

I haven’t seen anything bad about the Searwood.
Large flavorizer may be on the thinner side but it’s stainless and looks good to me. The diffuser could be used as a weapon.

Are you possibly referring to the cotter pin issues that were a problem with the 1st generation SmokeFire (and not SearWood)?

Also have done 4 cooks on mine, no issues. I'll be putting some baby backs on there again this weekend. The first set I did were the best ribs I've ever made.

I bought the cover at same time I bought the grill.

I just watched a video of someone using the Searwood and it raised a question that would never have occurred to me without the video. I have zero experience with pellet grills and while I have looked at them at Ace Hardware, I’ve never been near one that was running. How loud are they? I’m asking because in the video he was using a griddle on the Searwood in manual mode and it sounded like a blast furnace. I currently have a Napoleon gas grill and an XL Green Egg on our deck with the seating area fairly close. Neither of them makes any noise at all. I assume there will be some noise from the auger and maybe a fan but this was way more than that. I Googled around online but really didn’t come up with any useful information. Sorry for all the newbie questions, I really appreciate the help and advice I’ve gotten from this forum.

I went from a gas grill to the searwood. I haven't been bothered by the noise, is it maybe noiser but nothing that has made me think wow this is loud.

Thanks, when watching other videos of it the noise seems to be mostly when the lid is open.

It sounds a lot like the convection oven in our kitchen when the oven fans are on. It's definitely louder than a gas grill, but outdoors it's really not an issue. At least not for me.
