I’m going to be using a Tromp King style device to make gyros, but it needs to be set on the bottom grate due to the spike height.
Can I put a couple of backyard bricks on the bottom grate to lift the meat up above the coals around it, or is there an issue I’m not considering?

I’m going to assume it’s a Weber kettle….since you mentioned charcoal? Anyway I’ve seen bricks used as helps to cooking so I see no problem with their use at all.

I bought one of these vertical spits too planning to make Doner Kebap in my Smokefire. While researching making Doner and Gyros at home, I realized that functionally a horizontal rotisserie on a grill would more accurately recreate the cooking conditions in a Gyros shop because the heat source is below rather than behind the meat. A horizontal rotisserie also has the advantage that it self-bastes vs. the juices running down and dripping away from a vertical spit. YMMV.
