So I recently bought a grill and it's a gas assisted charcoal. Came with two separate trays for the direct/ indirect heating. So I've been filling up one side and using it. I'm getting grill marks but not the blackened goodness I want. As far as coals I've waited until everyone of them has completely ashed over but then I thought by the time I was cooking the bottom layer was dying down. Should I not wait until they're completely ashed? Sorry totally n00b at grilling trying to git gud.

Lack of info. What grill, How are you lighting the coals? What kind of charcoal? How long did you let it go before you put food on? What food is it? It seems that you had a two zone fire? You have to put food over hottest part, to get that char look. Then move to cooler side until desired doneness.
