SmokeFire EX4
Hey guys,

Totally new here! This weekend I helped out at an event building a community park in our neighborhood, and Lowes sponsored the event. They provided the tools and raffled off a couple SmokeFire EX4 grills...and I won one!

I did a bit of research online and discovered there are some issues, so I called Weber and they are sending me some parts to install, which I was told will upgrade it to a 2nd generation.

Hopper Pellet Slide, EX-4
Glow Plug Igniter SF '21
Welded chute assembly, SmokeFire

My question is have you guys tried it with the new parts and are there still issues? If there are should I try to sell it and buy a different brand (or put the money to a new car lol)? I already have a DCS gas grill which is pretty nice but I would like to start doing more low slow smoking. I had a charcoal smoker that was very basic and I like to smoke the occasional chicken or ribs.

Thanks!

Mark

Wow nice score! I’m actually not sure if i have the new parts on my ex6 but in the around 3 months I’ve had it I’ve had zero problems . Keep that thing and enjoy it . It kicks out some great food

Very cool! I love mine and would buy another tomorrow if it died. If you keep it I’d double check the assembly and especially the glow plug and make sure it’s fully seated.

I have an ex4 with over 70 cooks on it. After you install the Weber supplied parts and update the firmware and software per their instruction you will be good to go. But make sure you go over the unit following the Weber Assembly booklet (available on line if you did not get one) paying special attention to how the firebox cover and slide are installed. A lot of these were hastily assembled and if not done correctly, it will seriously impact your enjoyment and satisfaction.

I am doing a USDA Prime 16# full packer brisket as I write this and it is 2 hours into an 18-20 hour run.

These units turn out great food!

I have cooked on several other brands of pellet cookers (leading brands) and the Weber is overwhelmingly my favorite. I just find both the results and versatility to be off the charts. This is not to say others might enjoy a different cooker more than this one, it’s simply my personal experience. Congratulations!

Wow, that's an awesome prize to win, congratulations!
I hope you have plenty of success with it. As said above, just double-check the assembly of the unit as some early problems were attributed to store-built units.

The instruction booklet and/or the BILT app should help with this:
The welded chute assembly made a HUGE difference to my EX6, after having some issues getting it up to temperature and slow responsiveness to temperature changes, that bit of kit made it feel like a different product (in a good way!).

At that price point, run with it! (y)
Some of us are still having issues. :(
The vast majority are doing much better than originally. :)
I would not get rid of mine but I will still cuss it frequently.

And do the welded chute immediately.

Congrats! Welcome. That’s a nice score. I have an EX6, all original, except a fuse. Oh and the ramp attachment. Works great. Love it. Happy cooking.

I got all those parts and my EX4 works fine. My only issue is, that when i'm going to high temp and change it to a lower temp, the SF won't stop at the lower temp and is going deeper. I takes about 10min to realize that it should heating up again. But last weekend there was a software-update... Maybe with it my issue will be gone...

With the latest software update it is much better. However, I still prefer to make major temperature drops incrementally.
