Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day here on Long Island, 58 degrees. So why not spend the day outside working in the yard and smoking / grilling some food. I had a plan and was on a mission until it seems everything went wrong.
I had bought thick sliced bacon from Snake river Farms and my wife had three very nice NY Strips, great start. I prepped the bacon early in the morning, went out and cleaned up the EX-6, fresh pellets, ready to roll. I headed to the shed to install a bottom flush bolt to hold the door open but when I was done the top handle was too long and hit the other door. No problem, break out the grinder with a cut off wheel and shorten it up except I managed to slip and put a groove in my knuckle instead. Ok, a few Band-Aids and some tape and back at it. All finished, works great.
At 11:30 I fired up the SF and went to get the bacon, came out and the display on the SF was flashing on and off so I shut it down, tried to restart, kept flashing. I checked the outlet, cord, fuse, nothing. The SF was dead. Plan B, fire up the 22 WSM, overkill for a pound and a half of bacon but I wasn't giving up. While the bacon was smoking away at 225 I uncovered the gasser, first time since August, and cleaned that up so I could cook the steaks later. Fired up no problem but the tank was almost empty, back to the shed for the spare tank. I forgot I had given the tank and my turkey fryer to my son a few weeks back so off to the store to get a refill.
The bacon came off the smoker after 2 1/2 hours, looked and smelled great but was a little limp, decided to put it on the gasser for a few minutes to finish. I went inside and started talking with my son and forgot about the bacon, came out and it was burnt to a crisp, into the garbage it went.
The steaks had thawed, time to trim and dry brine them, opened them up and they were all kinds of brown and gray, into the garbage they went. As I'm talking with my wife about Plan C a box is delivered on the front stoop...from Omaha Steaks. My sister from Florida sent a box full steaks, we are in !! Put the CI skillet on the gasser, got it good and hot and cooked four beautiful filet mignons in the dark.
Hoping Weber can help with the SF and next Sunday goes a little better.
